proposals passed will be the nra and whether or not they have changed their stance at all and whether they will support republican and democrat members who have been in. ra supporters. will they be supportive of them in voting for this kind of legislation if it gets there? >> i think it depends what the legislation ends up being, march that. the president gave a pretty sweeping mandate yesterday to the new task force being led by the vice president to look at, yes, new gun ons but also as you mention, mental health issues, school safety issues, and so on. it depends on what we end up with as the final product. the nra says they will do a press conference in pretty short order. they are going to start to address some of these issues. you're right to point out since the expiration of the assault weapons ban in 2004, the reason it hasn't been reinstituted is because not just because of republican opposition to it but because of a lot of democrats as well. now that is changing, especially after this connecticut tragedy. a lot of people who resisted this kind of thing in the past now are s

it done? >> well, they probably don't have the votes today. it will be interesting to see what the nra who is going to be making press announcements tomorrow start to say and whether they start letting some members off the hook on assault weapons bans. i don't know if they will, but i can tell you this. the nra has four million members. you know, the campaigns like mayors against illegal guns and others, within a few weeks they are going to have four million members. this is just not going to be tolerated in the same way anymore. and senators like scott brown may end up being kind of the first test on this. he made that crafty statement because he opposed a federal bill in the past. >> you mean the state should have the responsibility. >> right. but he knew as a senator that it was never going to pass. he was the number one recipient of nra money in his campaign over this last year. a lot of senators are going to find themselves in the cross hairs because of taking all of that money and when he comes back to -- tries to come back to the senate, that may very well be a big issue. >> like jo

from the nra say they want more gun control? >> that's right. mark warner of virginia says he thinks this was game changer because of the number of children involved. he's a moderate democrat who was opposed to gun control and now says he's ready to look at it. joe manchin of west virginia saying much the same. he also said while he's been opposed to gun control, he thinks it needs to be looked at now. there needs to be some kind of action for both sides to come together and mayor michael bloomberg, who has been outspoken, was asked about whether the fiscal cliff and other issues will push gun control to the back burner. he mocked that idea. take a listen. >> if congress and the president can't focus on two things at once, who on earth did we elect? >> one thing that might find bipartisan support is diane feinstein says she'll reintroduce a ban on assault weapon which is people across the political spectrum have said go a bit mar. maybe they need to be rained in. and the white house is saying that's one specific thing the president would support. >> john: ed henry tonight. thanks. >>

yourself received an "a" rating from the n.r.a. but you spoke of possible changes to our gun laws. what changes specifically can you support now? >> well, i think we have to step back from all of this discussion and start really trying to examine what happened in connecticut and why it happened in connecticut. i also am a very staunch proponent of looking at our mental health system in this country and started a dressing those concerns as well. during the time that i was attorney general was also the time of columbine, there were a number of school shootings. i served as a chair of a committee that we pulled together within the national association of attorneys general to begin to discuss what we could change and i'm not willing to throw out one solution against other solutions. i think we need to understand this culture. i think we need to understand what happened. n this specific decision that this young man made to do one of the most horrific things that can be done in america and how we're going to prevent that in the future. i'm about results, actually about things that matter and

for you. guest: the nra will have to speak for itself. i never understood why if you buy a gun at a gun show there should be less of a reporting of a background check then if you went into a store. most of this ground would have been there before, there it was after columbine or the cafeteria in texas. the texas incident is a tragic one. there was a woman that had a gun. she was going into the cafeteria and have begun with her. -- and she had it with her. she decided to leave it in her car. 10 minutes later, a gunman showed up and she has lived with guilt her entire life. if she had her gun, she could of taking him out within a few seconds. we have to look at the world as it is. the firearms are not going away. host: john fund, "national review," thank you for your time. >> on wed.'s washington journal, a discussion on mental-health issues. representative tim murphy of pennsylvania and grace napolitano of california. francisco negron gives his perspective on how school boards are developing and implementing emergency plans. later, we hear from the editor of the atlantic. he will talk ab

of gun owners who say, you know what? this time we've got to do things differently. >> what about the nra? >> well, the nra is an organization that has members who are mothers and fathers and i would expect that they have been impacted by this as well and hopefully they will do some self-reflection and. here's what we know. that any single gun law can't solve all these problems. we're going to have to look at mental health issues. we'll have to look at schools. there are going to be a whole range of things that joe's group looks at. we know that issues of gun safety will be an element of it. and, you know, what wave seen over the past 20 years, 15 years, is the sense that anything related to guns is somehow an encroachment on the second amendment. what we're looking for here is a thoughtful approach that says, we can preserve our second amendment, we can make sure that responsible gun owners are able to carry out their activities, but, that we're going to actually be serious about the safety side of this. that we're going to be serious about making sure that something like newtown or auro
